Getting Started
NoteFreak is a rhythm game where notes fall down from the top of your screen toward a hit circle at the bottom. Your goal is to hit the corresponding keys (A, S, D, J, K by default) exactly when the notes reach the hit circle. Perfect timing gives you the highest score, while hitting notes too early or too late will result in lower points. The better your timing, the higher your score and the longer your combo streak!
The default keyboard controls are: A (Yellow lane), S (Purple lane), D (Green lane), J (Red lane), K (Blue lane). These keys correspond to the 5 colored lanes on your screen. You can see which key matches which lane by looking at the labels on the hit circles at the bottom of the game. The keys are positioned to allow comfortable gameplay with both hands.

Gameplay
Your score is based on timing accuracy and combo multipliers. Perfect hits give 50 points, Good hits give 37 points, and OK hits give 25 points. Missing notes breaks your combo. Your combo multiplier increases as you hit consecutive notes perfectly, significantly boosting your score. The maximum multiplier varies by song difficulty.
Each song offers multiple difficulty levels: Easy (fewer notes, slower speed, perfect for beginners), Medium (moderate note density, good for learning), and Expert (maximum challenge with rapid-fire sequences). Higher difficulties have more notes, and more complex rhythm patterns, but they also offer higher potential scores.
Start with easier songs to build muscle memory and timing sense. Focus on the audio cues as much as visual ones - the notes are synced to the music. Practice regularly in short sessions rather than long grinding periods. Pay attention to the hit feedback to understand if you're hitting early or late, then adjust accordingly.
Note difficulty varies based on the song's rhythm complexity. Some notes may be part of rapid sequences, off-beat rhythms, or complex musical patterns. Additionally, your browser's performance, audio latency, and internet connection can affect timing. If you're consistently having trouble, check our troubleshooting guide for optimization tips.
Technical Support
Creating a fast-paced and accurate rythm game running natively on the browser can be challenging. There is constant code optimization to ensure a smooth gameplay, but at the end of the day, your device will dictate how well the game runs. First, ensure you're using a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge). Close other browser tabs and applications to free up memory, especially ones that utilize your GPU. Check that hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser settings. For best performance, mantain your browser's zoom level to 100%. If problems persist, try clearing your browser cache or switching to a different browser or device.
Audio synchronization issues can occur due to various factors. First, ensure your audio drivers are up to date. Try using wired headphones instead of Bluetooth for lower latency. In your browser, check that no audio enhancements or effects are enabled. Close other audio applications that might be interfering. If the issue persists, the game may need manual audio calibration (feature coming soon).
Currently, NoteFreak is optimized for desktop/laptop computers with physical keyboards. Mobile support is planned for the future, but the current version requires keyboard input for optimal gameplay. You can access the website on mobile to view scores and browse songs, but actual gameplay requires a physical keyboard.
NoteFreak works best on modern browsers including Google Chrome (recommended), Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge. We recommend keeping your browser updated to the latest version for optimal performance. Internet Explorer is not supported due to its lack of modern web standards required for the game engine.
