Blog

Hey everyone!

It's been a busy few days since my last update, and I'm excited to share what's been happening behind the scenes at NoteFreak. I've got some major improvements rolling out.

Dark mode is here (and the site's getting a makeover!)

Dark mode is now implemented and I'm in the middle of a heavy website redesign. The redesign is still in progress, so you might notice some visual inconsistencies as I polish everything up. I'm still not too sure in which direction I'm taking it, I just go with the vibe ๐Ÿ˜…

More songs coming!

In the following days I should add more songs. I don't really have a criteria for choosing them, I just make sure every track has a somewhat playable and enjoyable chart. Let me know in Discord if you have song suggestions. As always, you can chart songs in the editor (Profile dropdown > My songs).

Multiplayer

This is a big one and I'm excited for it. Multiplayer is about 60% complete and I'm deep into the connection logic to make everything rock-solid stable.

Here's what's working:

  • Real-time synchronization between players
  • Lobby system for creating and joining games, with chat
  • Score comparison during gameplay

What I'm still perfecting:

  • Connection stability (no one wants lag or being disconnected randomly)
  • Matchmaking, lobby management and song voting
  • Multiplayer-specific game mechanics, like end screen results.

The goal is to have smooth, competitive multiplayer that feels just as responsive as single-player. I envision it to be a core component of NoteFreak, along with other community-related features.

Here's a sneak peek of a lobby (click to expand):

What's next?

In the immediate future, I'm focusing on:

  1. Finishing multiplayer - Getting that connection stability as good as possible and delivering a good experience.
  2. More songs - Adding more tracks to the catalog.

Until then, keep rocking,
Andy

Andy from NoteFreak

Hello! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Welcome to NoteFreak! This is Andy, the website's developer. A little about me and how this came to be:

I've been hooked on music rhythm games since I can remember. There something very satisfying about hitting notes to the rhythm of a song; I get a tiny dopamine hit! Some of you may know about JamLegend from back in the day. I was an avid player, spending hours jamming and pretending I was some kind of rock star, so naturally, I was very sad to see it shut down.

Over time, some new games appeared, emulating the nostalgia of JamLegend, notably RockLegend.org, but they also shut down.

Consider NoteFreak.com the spiritual successor, another try in this day and age. I have big plans for it, although don't take anything for granted (for now!). It's still a side project, so I won't be able to dedicate 100% of my time to it. I still need to work my day job to pay the bills.

The future of NoteFreak

I want to implement a ton of things, like:

  • Full-featured chart editor
  • Mobile device/touch support
  • Multiplayer
  • Duels
  • ... and more!

What to expect from this blog

  • Feature announcements and changelogs
  • Community spotlights and editor tips
  • ... and whatever else feels right.

If you have ideas improvements, or any other feedback, ping me on Discord. This platform is in its early stages, so your feedback can really shape its future!

On a final note (no pun intended)

If you like what you see and want to support the project, the biggest help you can give is to share this website with your friends. Let's build an awesome community! ๐Ÿ’š
